GALINA V.STAROVOITOVA

Born in Cheljabinsk, Russia, in 1946. BA from Lenningrad College ofMilitary Engeneering (1966); MA in social psychology from Leningrad University(19710; Ph.D in social anthropology from the Institute of Ethnography, USSR Academy of Sciences (1980). Expanded version of Ph.D. study publishedas: "Ethnic Group in Modern Soviet City." Leningrad: Nauka, 1987(in Russian). Also published extensively on anthropological theory, cross-culturalstudies, and Caucasian anthropology.

In 1889-91, member of the USSR Parliament (Congress of People's Deputies), prominent of the democratic opposition to the Communist Party. In 1990-93, member of the Congress of People's Deputies of the Russian Federation.

In 1991-1992, served as Advicer to Russian President Boris Yeltzin onethnological issues.

In 1993-94, stayed as a Peace Fellow at the United State Institute ofPeace in Washington, DC.

In 1994-95, taught as Thomas watson Distinguished Visiting Professorat Broun University (Providence,RI)

Since 1995, member of the State Duma of the Russian Federation froma St.Petersburg constituency.

In 1996, was the only woman nominated for Russian presidency (withdrewfrom the campaign). One of the founders of the "Democratic Russia"party (currently serves as its co-chairperson).
