Picking
Before you do something, you've got to tell ANSYS what to do it to. Usually the Pick window comes up, ANSYS's way of asking you to "pick" the entities you want to work with. For example, when you click on Delete and then Areas, the pick window will come up to ask you which areas you want to delete--that's one important characteristic about the pick window, it already know what type of entity you're going to pick, just not which ones. When you pick something, it's color will change in the Graphics window to show you what you picked. It can sometimes be difficult to pick just what you want, so you should always be sure you're picking the right thing.
The first option in the pick window
tells ANSYS you're going to pick something. If you
mistakenly pick the wrong thing, you can always select Unpick here and
undo your error. Clicking the right mouse button also toggles between
Pick and Unpick.
Single allows you to pick an entity by simply clicking on it. You can only pick 1 entity at a time, but many in succession. It is very easy to mistakenly pick the wrong entity, so be careful. The picking arrow doesn't seem very precise. Box, Polygon, and Circle allow you to pick one or more entities by drawing either a box, polygon, or circle around them. For some reason I find Box the most useful. Make sure only to include those items you want to pick. Loop - I have no idea what this does. The next section is a sort of status box. Count tells you how many entities you've picked so far. Maximum tells you how many entities of the type of which you are picking are available to be picked. Minimum tells you at least how many entites you must pick. Entity No. (in this case AREA) shows you the number of the entity that is currently selected when you pick something using Single. While pressing the left mouse button, you can drag the arrow and move around amongst the entities. Entity No. will tell you the number of the one currently highlighted. You may also pick entities by entering their number in with the keyboard in the ANSYS Input window:
The next section of the pick menu gives you two options for keyboard entry: List of Items allows you to enter a single entity number in this box, or a list of entity numbers like: 1,2,12,86 \retMin, Max, Inc allows you to specify a range of entities to pick. Click OK when finished picking all you want to pick. Click RESET if you want to start picking all over again (unpicks everything). Click CANCEL if you decide you don't want to do anything to anything. Click PICK ALL if you want to pick the Maximum number of entities. Clicking APPLY performs the command (e.g. delete, glue, ...) on the currently picked entities, but the pick window doesn't go away. You have the option to continue picking entities and performing that same command on them.
